Built form vs public life
Figure 2.5.1HBuilding frontage, staying activity, vehicular movement and pedestrian throughput.
LEGEND
ACTIVITY (TOOLKITS 2 AND 5)
Staying: one circle = 5 people
Vehicles, busy (over 50 per 10 min)
Vehicles, quiet (under 50 per 10 min)
Pedestrians, busy (50 to 100 per 10 min)
Pedestrians, quiet (0 to 50 per 10 min)
WHAT WE COUNTED
The perimeter has the most open frontage of the three areas: 37% closed, 27.8 doors per 100 m. Yet it holds almost no one, and places to linger score 1.0 of 5. In the evening, activity gathers in the sheltered gaps between the flats and in the park.

WHAT IT MEANS
Open edges do not bring people here. Six lanes of traffic push them off every edge alike. Shelter and distance from traffic decide where they stay.
