Shade dictates movement, not distance
MORNING 10:00–12:00
EVENING 16:00–18:00
Figure 2.4.1HWhere people walked, morning and evening. Schematic: each dot sits at random in its zone.
WHAT WE COUNTED
In the morning, with about 15% of the route shaded, 73 people (82%) walked in the sun and 16 in shade. In the evening, with 70 to 80% shaded, 291 (90%) walked in shade and 31 in the sun.

WHAT IT MEANS
The idea holds most clearly here. The routes did not get shorter, so distance cannot explain the change. More shade also brings more people out: 322 in the evening against 89 in the morning.
